What Is "Kansei"?

Chikusen’s dyeing art is a blend of traditional stencil techniques and expert craftsmanship, a legacy dating back to the Edo and Meiji periods. The word "Kansei" (鑑), meaning a model of excellence and expert judgment, is proudly inscribed on our fabrics, symbolizing our commitment to quality.

As a modern SPA (Specialty store retailer of Private label Apparel), Chikusen designs, produces, and sells its products in-house. Guided by the spirit of "Kansei", we continue to uphold the highest standards in craftsmanship.

History

Founded in 1842 during the late Edo period, Chikusen gained fame by transitioning from yukata to Edo Komon, even inspiring Kabuki art.

Post-war, the store reopened in Asakusa, maintaining its traditional craftsmanship and earning acclaim from prestigious retailers, leading to its relocation to Nihonbashi. Today, the current head preserves this legacy while recreating historical patterns and designs, blending tradition with innovation.

A Message from the Owner

Welcome to the Chikusen website, and thank you for visiting. I am Fumio Ogawa, the fifth-generation head of Chikusen.

Specializing in Edo Komon and yukata, we have carried on the essence of "Edo" since our founding during the cultural peak of the Edo period.

This year’s theme is: "Yukata: Now a Summer Kimono." We hope you enjoy our latest creations.
